Dr. Peter Dewald Griffin of Westport, Connecticut died at his home on November 29. He was 58 years old. The cause of death was cancer of the pancreas. Dr. Griffin was born on July 7, 1958, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and grew up primarily in Glen Rock, New Jersey. After commencement from Glen Rock High School in 1976, he attended Rutgers University School of Engineering, graduating with a Bachelor's of Science, Electrical Engineering, high honors, in May 1980. He was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, as well as Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honor society. He continued his education at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, receiving his Medical Doctorate in 1984. He was then accepted into Columbia University's combined Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine program, becoming board certified in both specialties in 1988 and 1991, respectively. A Master's in Public Health, also from Columbia, was added in 1991. While earning these advanced degrees, Dr. Griffin worked in a physician shortage area in upstate New York out of Syracuse Community Health Center, fulfilling a two year commitment to the National Public Health Service. Here he earned the NPHS Regional Administrators Award for his work on AIDS and Drug Addiction. It was in upstate New York where his interest in outdoor sports was born. Returning to the New York metropolitan area in 1989, Dr. Griffin settled in Westport and began his career as a corporate medical consultant, working as a medical director for a variety of large industrial companies including Allied Signal, Pitney Bowes, Koch Industries and Praxair. He was a volunteer board member for the Ridgefield Visiting Nurses Association and the American Cancer Society and donated his time to the AmeriCares free clinic in Norwalk, as well. After a long and adventurous bachelorhood, Peter met the love of his life, Phawana Chaorinuea, to whom he was married in 2004. In 2010 they welcomed a son, Cole. Phawana and Peter lived their happiest years over the following decade, sailing their boat out of Westport to the many ports-of-call in the Long Island Sound and beyond. Peter enjoyed sailing, skiing, fly fishing, nature, hunting, and photography. He finished the New York Marathon in 2014. Although firmly grounded in science, Peter was passionate about music, art, history and literature, especially poetry. A prolific writer, his last published work, Love Land, includes his poems and the portrait art of his dear friend, John Schlereth. Dr. Griffin is additionally survived by his father, Peter Craig Griffin, (his mother, Margaret having passed away in 1983), stepmother Doris, stepfather Jock, brothers Alex, Tony and John, sisters Christine and Rachael, and stepsiblings Douglas and Karen. Aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and associates too numerous to mention also mourn his passing. The funeral mass will be read from Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Westport, where he was a devoted and long-time communicant. The many lives Peter touched and enriched are a testament to the strength of his character and the brightness of his life. We will miss him, but he will always be with us. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM directly in Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport. His interment will be private.
