Rafael Angel "El Negro" Hernandez, age 71, beloved husband of, Clara Reinoso Hernandez, of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully into eternal life with his family by his side on Sunday, January 1, 2017. Born and raised in Aquas Buenas, Puerto Rico, Rafael moved to New York in 1965, where he met and married the love of his life, Clara, then finally settled in Bridgeport in 1970. He had worked as a sous-chef for Fairfield University for 37 years and was an avid New York Yankees fan. A mechanic by trade, Rafael had extensive knowledge and a passion for classic cars, both collecting and restoring them. He especially cherished the times that he spent cooking for and being with his family and above all, his faithful four pawed companion "Gabby" Hernandez. In addition to Clara, his loving wife of 49 years, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Ivonne Hernandez, and her fiancee, Frank Cuccaro, of Bridgeport and Anna Clabby, and her husband, Corey, of Milford; Roberto Villar, (who was like a son to Rafael) and his wife, Heather, of Fairfield; siblings, Pedro J. Hernandez Ayala, and his wife, Carmine, Maria S. Hernandez Ayala, and her husband, Gilberto, Virginia Hernandez Ayala, Antonio Hernandez Ayala, and Agustin Acevedo Ayala, all from Puerto Rico; an aunt, Carmen Hernandez, and her husband, Gilberto, of Bridgeport; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Rafael was predeceased by his only son, Nelson Hernandez; and siblings, Carmen A. Hernandez Ayala, Epifanio Hernandez Ayala, Carlos C. Hernandez Ayala, and Rafael Acevedo Ayala. Friends may call on Thursday, January 5, from 12 pm-1 pm in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center.
